Start your tax account closure review with Albuquerque Business Brokers Edge and bring the questions below to the people helping you prepare.
Match the account to the entity
Selling equipment, inventory and customer relationships may leave the selling entity in existence. It may still have final receipts, payroll, expenses or other matters to report.
Ask your accountant which accounts belong to the seller and which registrations a buyer needs. Do not assume the buyer can simply operate under your tax account.
Use the state closure process
New Mexico provides an account closure process through its Taxpayer Access Point and identifies a business tax registration form as another route. Confirm the current instructions before submitting a closure.
Keep the effective date consistent with what actually happened in the business. A convenient closing date on the purchase agreement may not answer every tax reporting question.
Account closure does not erase unpaid returns or tax. Have your accountant check remaining filing periods and payment duties rather than treating closure as a clean balance certificate.
Keep evidence after the handoff
Retain the account closure confirmation and your final filing records with the sale documents. Arrange continued access to the records your advisors may need.
If the entity will continue operating, discuss whether closure is appropriate at all. The right next step depends on the transaction rather than a universal instruction to close every account.
